Why Ocean Conservation?
"By the year 2100, without significant changes, more than half of the world’s marine species may stand on the brink of extinction" - UNESCO 2018 RIO+ Intergovernmental Governmental Commission Report.
This is a problem on a grand scale-- all the way up on the totem pole. Phytoplankton contributes to more than 50% of the oxygen that all animals breathe. Yet, because of algal blooms and increases in ocean temperatures, the phytoplankton population has been predicted to have dropped by 40% since 1950. This number continues to increase.
Overfishing of small fish, rays, and sharks is real. According to the WWF Living Planet report: in the last 40 years, there has been a decrease in marine species by approximately 39%: in addition, the 2014 United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that 61% of fish stocks worldwide have been fully fished. If this continues, cetaceans and higher trophic levels of animals will begin to disappear as well: and they have. Fisheries, desperate to maintain business from depleted fishstocks, have been illegally fishing dolphins and whales more frequently in the last 5 years.
That's not all: 500 dead zones around the world add up to 245,000 square km: the whole size of the UK. It's also been estimated that 35% of critical marine habitats have already been destroyed by anthropogenic activity. Though our oceans cover more than 71% of our globe, it has been estimated that our oceans received less than 1% of philanthropic funding in the last 10 years. Because of the business incentives to abuse the ocean's resources, monetary backing is necessary to provide sufficient legal defense for our oceans.
How does this relate to Maredis? As a brand, Maredis has three primary objectives: revolutionary design, product quality, and the preservation of our oceans.
That is why 25% of each order will be donated to the Oceana nonprofit organization.
Not just 25% of our profit margin-- 25% of the entire order.
Oceana is one of the most prominent advocates for conservation efforts, and we want to honor our word with action. They have already protected more than 4.5 million square miles of ocean, and: with the help of 850,000 backers, are looking to expand even further. And unlike one of those charities where you don't know where the money is actually going, you will receive an receipt from Oceana to confirm your donation.
We take our commitment seriously. If you've read this far, you're probably someone who is conscientious of your place in the environment, someone who thirsts for something different, a rush beyond the status quo. You are exactly the type of person we are looking for to join our cause. On behalf of Maredis,: welcome.! Together, I sincerely believe that we can preserve and nurture our oceans for later generations to enjoy and admire.
And don't forget-- clean vibes, clean oceans, clean me. We are-- Maredis.
